CSIR NET 2017 Eligibility Criteria and Exam Pattern

The Human resource development (HRD) department of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts NET exam for Junior research fellowship awards and for the lecturer ship in universities or laboratories of CSIR department. 

Candidates from science background, who wants to do research or join as assistant professor in national universities can apply for the CSIR NET 2017 exam. CSIR has released notification regarding  for CSIR NET/JRF exam eligibility criteria and exam pattern.

We will discuss CSIR NET 2017 exam eligibility criteria and exam pattern in detail. Make sure if you are eligible for the net exam or JRF award ship program.

What is the CSIR NET 2017 exam eligibility criteria?


There is CSIR NET eligibility criteria issued by CSIR regarding educational qualification and age limit. Candidates must ensure if they fulfill the eligibility for the NET exam for JRF and lecturter ship.

CSIR NET exam is being conducted for five subjects i.e. Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences. To apply in the CSIR NET Exam 2017 candidates must be from science background. Other eligibility are as follows:

Age Limit for CSIR NET Exam Eligibility


  • For JRF: candidate’s age should not be greater than 28 years for general category. There is 5 years age relaxation for the reserved categories SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer).
  • For Assistant professor: There is no upper age limit for lecturer ship or assistant professor post.


Educational eligibility for CSIR NET Exam


Candidates should check their CSIR NET 2017 exam eligibility regarding educational qualification. We have discussed required educational qualification for CSIR NET Exam. Candidates required any one of the following degrees: 

Degree Required
Minimum marks
BE/B-Tech


With minimum 55% marks for general category and 50% marks for SC/ST//OBC(NCL)/PWD and female Category candidates
M.Sc.
Integrated BS-MS
BS-4 Years
MBBS
B-Pharma
Or an Equivalent Degree


  • Candidates who applied for above master’s degree and whose results are awaited are also eligible to apply, however they will have to submit the attestation format (Given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Department/Institute from where the candidate is appearing or has appeared.
  • Candidates need to have Subject related educational qualification to apply for the specific subject mentioned before.

NOTE: Candidates having PhD degree and who have completed Master’s degree prior to 19th September 1991, with at least 50% marks can apply for Lectureship only.

CSIR NET 2017 Exam Pattern

CSIR NET examination consists of five subjects as follows:
  1. Chemical Sciences
  2. Physical Sciences
  3. Mathematical Sciences
  4. Earth Sciences
  5. Life Sciences

According to CSIR NET exam pattern, it will have questions in three parts- part A, part B and part C. 
  1. Part A will be same for all the subjects. It will have 20 questions related to general science, Quantitative aptitude and reasoning ability. This part examines the general and mental ability of the candidates to solve the problems.
  2. Part B consists subject related multiple-choice questions to check the candidate’s knowledge of the subjects. 
  3. Part C Questions related to higher value of the subject to test the scientific approach of the candidates. Candidates need to have scientific knowledge and concepts to solve the problem.
  • There will be negative marking for the wrong answer.
  • Total time duration will be three hours for all subject paper.
