Difference between IBPS PO & SBI PO Exam Syllabus

Do you want to make a career in the banking sector? Here we are going to talk about the difference between syllabus of the IBPS PO and SBI PO

Every year large no. of candidates appears in bank PO exam. Depending on the vacancy in participant banks, IBPS and SBI conducts bank PO exam to determine the eligibility of the candidate for the probationary officer.

In the process to become a bank PO candidates need to give exams in three phases to prove their ability in the exam as a preliminary exam, main exam and personal interview. SBI conducts a descriptive test of 50 marks in addition to these three phases.


Candidates should be aware of the syllabus and exam pattern for better preparation. We discussed here the difference between IBPS PO & SBI PO syllabus and exam pattern.

IBPS PO & SBI PO Syllabus


There is a minor difference between IBPS PO & SBI PO syllabus as a preliminary exam for both exams consist of three subjects while the main exam consists of five subjects i.e. English, quantitative aptitude, reasoning, general awareness and computer knowledge. The marks distribution for both the exam is as follows:

Both the exam follows the same pattern for a preliminary exam. There is negative marking of the .25 marks for each wrong answer.

IBPS PO & SBI PO Main Exam 



Candidates who secure minimum qualifying marks in preliminary exam are shortlisted for the main examination. The major difference between IBPS PO & SBI PO main exam is that SBI conducts a descriptive test with the main exam to check the writing skills of the candidates. 

Candidates need write an essay, letter, application in the English language to give the descriptive test. The descriptive examination consists of 50 marks while IBPS doesn’t conduct such descriptive test.

English Language Descriptive Test

50 Marks

30 Minutes

After phase II of the main exam there comes phase III i.e. GD & PI round. SBI conducts group discussion of 20 marks and personal interview session of 30 marks while IBPS doesn’t conduct group discussion and held personal interview of 100 marks.


Candidates need to have the ability to handle general life situations, and leadership quality to clear GD& PI session. Final selection made based on the marks obtained in main exam and GD & PI (Phase III).
